Why he might not win: The last defender to win this award was Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 so it's clear that defenders don't usually win this award.

Why he should win: With 51 goals in 50 appearances for Barcelona last season he's still as lethal as ever in front of goal.
Why he might not win: Barcelona's epic Champions League meltdown against Liverpool at Anfield and his continued failure to win a major trophy with Argentina will count heavily against him.
Alisson Becker
Why he should win: Winner of the Premier League, Champions League & Copa America Golden Glove Awards making him the first ever goalkeeper to win 3 Golden Glove Awards in one season.
Why he might not win: If you think Van Dijk has it tough trying to win this award as a defender then spare in mind that the last time a goalkeeper won this award was Lev Yashin in 1963!!!
Cristiano Ronaldo
Why he should win: Helped his country to win the first ever UEFA Nations League trophy while also winning another league title, this time with Juventus in Serie A.
Why he might not win: He just come off his lowest goal scoring season in over a decade and the Champions League elimination against Ajax will count against him.
